I'm going to list down top 10 most important Linux commands that you will need every now and then while using Linux.
So, let's jump to the topic :
“ls” command is a command used for listing purpose. It shows all the directories in the location.
This will list all the folders stored in home folder.
So ls command is very useful for viewing different folders, files and directories.
“cd” command is used for changing the directory. It allows the user to change between different folders or directories.
This will allow the user to go in myfolder directory.
“mv” command is used for moving a file to other folder or directories.
mv /home/folder /home/newfolder
It will move the files from “folder” to “newfolder”.
“—help” command comes very handy when you are looking for all the switches available for a command.
It will show all the supporting switches list with proper working and features.
“mkdir” command is used in order to make directory.
This will create newfolder.
“rmdir” is used in order to remove the directory.
This will remove newfolder
“touch” it works same as “mkdir” command It also creates empty files like documents and .txt files rather than folders.
This will create an empty testfile.txt
“rm” is also used to remove the files and directories. It will also remove the files with in a directory that you intend to remove.
This will remove the text file “myfile.txt”
“locate” command is used for finding the files in Linux OS.
It comes with different switches as well.
locate -i foldernew**general*
The stated command will locate all the files name containing "folder", "new" and "general". Here the “i” tells the system to ignore the capitalization and the “*” is used as wildcard and it will get all the files matching the search criteria.
“clear” command does what it says. It will clear the screen and wipes out the board. It will take you from where you started in console.
